The long awaited season finale of Game of Thrones came with a bandwagon of emotions that we are yet to recover from. The episode being 20 minutes longer than the usual 1 hour mark was jam packed with reunions, character moments, deaths, destruction and even some good old fashion Game of Thrones Nudity .
This is a very difficult episode to write about as so many things happened that i still find it hard to wrap my head around it, so lets break the review down to certain pivot points. Mild Spoilers Ahead….
Stark Sisters vs. Little Finger
Little Finger, the best player of the game of thrones got owned playing his own game. The Winterfell scenes of last 6 episodes were setting up this very moment. The guy who invented the game beaten at it by his own student. Everything that happened from turning Lannisters against Starks to Ned Stark’s death, from Selling Sansa to the Boltons to controlling the whole army of the Vale all perfectly planned out by the man behind the shadows, Petyr Baelish. But this time, he lost playing his own game. Stark Sisters with a little help from Bran and his visions, made sure that there is no way Little Finger can scheme out of their trap. Arya nailed the final nail in the coffin by cutting his throat and leaving him to bleed out.
Well there is no denying the fact that we all enjoyed watching Little Finger get his throat slit by Arya, but i am not a huge fan of the way the writers worked down the storyline. The conflict scenes between Arya and Sansa felt forced and added for drama. Regardless, little finger ironically got owned playing his own game. Even though we all hated Little Finger it is sad to see him go. Props to Aiden Gillen, the actor who played the character, the show’s best quotes have all came from him. Here’s one of them
The Dragon Pit Reunion
Almost every major character on the show, in one frame. Finally the meeting we have all been waiting for, Daenerys meeting Cersei. The Dragon Pit scenes were lit with Tyrion and Jon trying to convince Cersei about the danger beyond the wall. Eventually it came down to the Hound kicking out the box with the Walker for Cersei to believe them. However Cersei agreed to help them with one condition. Jon would not take sides until the war is over. Jon being a man of his word, announces that he had already pledged his allegiance with Daenerys. This led to Cersei walking out, leaving them hanging. Tyrion comes up with a desperate plan to meet the lioness at her den and try to convince her for a truce. He did manage to convince her after some intense conversation, but Cersei is not someone who you would expect to keep her word. She did formally agree to help them, but later admitted to Jaimie that she had no intentions of helping Jon and the crew. Jaimie being a man of his word, realizes that Cersei has crossed the line and there is no coming back. He walks away from her and is seen fleeing on a horse to North to possibly fight along side Jon and Dany.
One of the best moments from Season 7, everyone under one roof ? every one in one pit ! . There were tons of character reunions, Podrick and Tyrion, Bronn and Tyrion, Tyrion and Cersei, The Hound and Mountain, Jaimie and Brienne to mention few. It sure was fun to see all the characters react to one another. Cersei’s reactions on seeing the dragons and the walker were priceless. The scene where the Walker approached Cersei gave major The Walking Dead vibes. Overall brilliant performance from our Three Lannister Actors, Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau.The king’s landing scenes from the episode gave us a clear idea of how the show will move forward come Season 8. Jon and Dany are surrounded with White Walkers at the north and Cersei and Euron along with their Golden Company Army in the South, but they seem to be busy with other things. Wink! Wink!
Another storyline that the show will address in next season is the Iron Islands storyline. After Euron capturing Yara in Season 7 Episode 2 of Game of Thrones, the show is yet to address her situation. Is she still alive? They had a great scene with Jon and Theon, two parallels, One who faced everything with courage, took a sword to his heart, while another who ran away from every conflict he ever had to face. Jon gave a great pep talk to Theon stating that he is a Stark and also an Iron Born. They had a great fight club esque scene with Theon beating the sh*t out of one of the Iron Island crew leaders. His storyline next season would mostly be trying to get his sister back from Euron.
The scene with Jon and Theon were very well written. Jon telling Theon to be a Stark and a Iron Born, is something that he’ll have to remind himself because he will soon find out that he is half Targaryen and half Stark.
Jon’s Parentage and The Wall Collapsing
Last but not the least, the most important parts of Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 7 ‘The Dragon And The Wolf’ were in the last 20 minutes. We see Samwell meeting Bran and the two figuring out that Jon is not a Stark bastard but a Targaryen prince who is true heir to the seven kingdoms. We get a glimpse of the Rhaegar’s annulment . This has huge implications going forward as they also have proof from the Citadel to prove Jon’s parentage to the rest of Westeros.
And how can we not talk about the last 10 minutes. The night king with his dragon burning down the wall. This is one of the most important moments in Game of Thrones. They have been hyping the wall’s strength since the first season. The way they talk about the wall is a clear indication that it will be brought down one day and that is exactly what happened. After tons of speculation from fans trying to figure out how the wall will eventually be brought down, it was fire from Daenerys dead dragon that did the job. We get a final shot with the Night King and his huge army of the dead marching south of the wall. Things does not look good for the living in Westeros. Oh By the Way, Jon’s real name is Aegon Targaryen, I wonder how many of you would prefer that over Jaeherys?
Best 20 minutes of Season 7, hands down. It was fun to see Jon’s parentage being visually confirmed. They have perfectly set up Season 8. I am not huge fan of the Actor who plays Rhaegar, even though we din’t see a lot of him, he looked a lot like the actor who plays Viserys. This might come along as a disappointment for fans who were awaiting to see him on screen after being portrayed in the books as the most handsome man in Westeros.
The scene with Night King and his dragon burning down the wall was beautiful to watch. The CGI overall was great. We do get a good idea where all the budget of Season 7 went and i must say they did put it to good use. Sadly we’ll have to wait till 2019 to find out how the story ends. Let’s just say, “Our Watch Has Begun!”
Easter Eggs,References and Observations
- Like previously mentioned in the article,Jon telling Theon to be a Stark and a Iron Born, is something that he’ll have to remind himself because he will soon find out that he is half Targaryen and half Stark.
- Samwell actually paid attention to Gilly when she mentioned about Rhaegar’s annulment few episodes back, now they have written proof to prove Jon’s real parentage.
- Tyrion looked worried when he saw Jon getting into Dany’s room for you know! What comes to mind is Cersei agreeing to help fight white walkers. Cersei is not someone who will have a change of heart. It seems as if, Tyrion promised Cersei that her baby will be the next heir to the Kingdom as he was told by Daenerys that she cannot have any children. And if Jon keeps this up 😉 , i’m not sure Cersei is going to get what she was promised.
